Not everyone gets a chance to travel cross country, so make it a smooth experience with these tips.
Set a Budget
Avoid running out of money by setting a generous budget. Even if you’re the adventurous type, potentially being stuck in the middle of nowhere should not turn into an episode of “Survivor.” When estimating the cost of a cross country trip, consider gas, lodging, provisions and sightseeing expenses. Then add at least 20 percent to your total for contingencies.
Why include recreation expenses? Even if you are traveling because of a stressful reason like a move, you might as well make good memories. Additionally, if you are traveling with children, this might cut down on the phrase “are we there yet?”
Plan the Route and Stops
Bringing printed directions on paper, even when using GPS, is a good idea. Decide how many days you’ll devote to the trip (this should relate to the the budget available), and map each section via online mapping tools. Leave a copy of these with a family member or friend, so they’ll know where to look in case something goes wrong.
Research lodging options at the end of each stops and try to make reservations. Don’t try to save money by sleeping in the car; you’ll need to feel refreshed to focus on the journey.

Also, make sure you’ll be able to contact a tow truck company if you break down. The last thing you want is to get out on the road, break down, and not be able to contact anyone to come help out with your problem. Companies like Roadway Towing Ltd. are a huge help to cross-country travelers.
Research Attractions
Even if you are the spontaneous type, it can’t hurt to research some attractions along the way beforehand to find out about visitor’s hours and costs. That way you won’t waste time planning a stop just to find out the place is closed or has restrictions. If you come across a place you want to visit while en route, do a quick online study with your phone.
Bring Refreshments
Even if you have a generous budget, bring provisions in case you find yourself outside the perimeter of stores or restaurants. How much to bring depends on the available space. Bottled water, trail mix and protein bars all keep very well on long travels and provide hydration and energy.
Entertainment for the Trip
Make sure everyone has ways to keep entertained. Think beyond personal music players and headphones:You could bring card games, word puzzle books, magazines and coloring books (depending on age). Even adults can benefit from some paper and pencils to engage the imagination while traveling. Don’t rely on electronics alone because they all need charged eventually. Of course bring a camera too.
Even with these sensible tips, allow for fun. You don’t have to plan everything, just balance common sense with spontaneity.
