With summer on the horizon, this is a perfect time to plan a relaxing vacation in the tropics. Long, lazy days at the beach and crisp evening breezes are just what the doctor ordered to reduce some of your life’s stress and come back with fresh energy. Before you take off for paradise, however, remember to pack the following:

Beach wear

In the midst of your vacation euphoria, you might forget one of the most basic items: your bathing suit. Pack several in case one gets torn or doesn’t dry completely overnight, a not unlikely possibility given the natural humidity of tropical destinations. Also bring sandals or flip flops so you can walk on the hot sand without burning your feet.

Insect repellant

Unfortunately, tropical locations tend to have a decent mosquito population. Remember to bring insect repellant to make your vacation as comfortable as possible. This way you can enjoy the tropics in all their natural glory without worrying about mosquito bites. Itchy, bumpy skin is not exactly an attractive look for the beach.

Sunscreen

This should be near the top of your packing list. The importance of sunscreen, especially in a sunny climate where most of your time is spent outdoors, cannot be overestimated. Your sunscreen should be powerful, at least SPF 50, for maximum possible protection. If you plan to do a lot of swimming, a waterproof sunscreen is ideal. Make sure it offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the year-round ones that can pass through clouds and glass to penetrate deep into your skin. They damage cells and can cause premature aging. UVB rays tend to me more of a threat in sunny seasons. They’re the ones that cause sunburns and can eventually lead to melanoma.

Sunglasses

Don’t leave home without a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. Be sure they offer 100% protection from the sun’s harmful rays. If you know how the sun can damage your skin, think what it can do to your sensitive and delicate eyes. Too much sun exposure can cause a host of vision problems, including cataracts and temporary blindness.

Wraparound sunglasses are best for protecting your eyes from the rays that sneak in from the top and sides. If you’re looking for some high end sunglasses, but don’t want to spend a ton of money, there are several places online where you can get a decent pair of shades. Pay in 3 has sunglasses in all kinds of qualities and price ranges that would be great for your next vacation in the sun.

Appropriate clothing

Finally, check the dress code for your location in advance. Some places, for example, don’t allow camouflage clothing. If you plan to eat at certain restaurants or attend formal events, make sure you bring appropriate attire.

The great thing about vacationing in the tropics is you can pack more clothing into less space. Take advantage of that by packing an outfit for every occasion. Don’t forget to include a light sweater for the cool evenings.
