Driving can be a very dangerous activity no matter how much experience you have. We all know it’s important to follow the rules of the road and be attentive to what is happening around us, but all of us are guilty of getting distracted in one way or another. Here are seven things we all need to stop doing in the car.
Using Mobile Devices
This is true even for hands-free devices. Texting, talking on the phone, or fumbling with an app can all cause distractions. Just a fraction of a second is all it takes to get into an accident. Put away all electronics before you start the engine, and make sure you already checked the map before you head out.
Engaging With Passengers
It’s time to stop engaging in long, intense, or emotional conversations with passengers. Don’t keep looking over at what others are doing as you drive, and limit yourself to talking to just a few words or sentences. You might even suggest your kids crank up the tunes and continue their conversations at the destination, which will help keep all of you focused on the road.
Personal Hygiene
Never perform personal hygiene tasks in a car. This includes putting on makeup, shaving, or attempting to put on clothes like a tie or jacket. These actions take your eyes off the road, and limit the use of your hands. Take a few extra minutes in the morning to make sure you’re dressed and ready to go.
Eating and Drinking
Stop eating and drinking as you drive since this could cause a serious accident. And in no circumstance should you drink alcohol in a car even in small amounts. Drinking and driving is illegal and will lead to a dwi case. A conviction for DWI can result in a suspended license, fines and jail time.
Playing Loud Music
Playing loud music in your car, even with the windows rolled up can inhibit your ability to hear what is going on outside the vehicle. This reduces your situational awareness, and makes you more prone to accidents.
Ride with Your Pet Unsecured
Driving with a pet unsecured and free to roam the car can be very hazardous. A pet could get very excited and jump onto your lap and the sudden surprise could confuse you, or unintentionally move your arms and legs causing a collision with other drivers. Keep pets in a proper carrier, and have passengers keep them inside when riding with you.
Reading Billboards and Advertisements
Reading amusing billboards can take your eyes off the road. A quick glance won’t kill, but when you have to make special effort to crane your head to read, you’re putting everyone around you at risk.
The last thing you want is to be responsible for an accident that injures another driver, yourself, or your vehicle. Don’t let your guard down, and if you stop doing these seven things in the car, your passengers and the people around you will thank you.
