1. Route 1, Big Sur, California

This official National Scenic Byway offers the most amazing views of the gorgeous Pacific Ocean that you could ever hope to see. Your drive will take you along the Santa Lucia Mountains in the east and the rocky Pacific Coast in the west. There are plenty of places to pull over to enjoy the view, so be sure to bring along your binoculars and camera. Many of these stopping points are also used by those who like to park and have a nature hike. Beaches, parks and many other attractions are accessible on this drive.

2. Highway 31, New Orleans, Louisiana

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy a road trip on this highway that takes you deep into the beautiful Louisiana countryside. Here you will drive right next to swamps teeming with wildlife. Expect to see an abundance of alligators that sometimes don’t want to get out of the road. You will also see a huge variety of birds that include heron, egret and ibis, as well as many other animals.

3. State Route 12, Garfield and Wayne County, Utah

Designated an All-American Road, this one will take you through a variety of places. You will drive up and down Boulder Mountain, cross into Dixie National Forest and Bryce Canyon National Park, drive over the Escalante River and so much more. Many activities are available along the way that should not be passed up by any means.

4. U.S. Route 1, Key West, Florida

Drive along the coastline of the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Expect to find many activities along the way that include underwater coral reefs, 7 Mile Bridge, marinas where you can hand-feed tarpon and more beach bars than you could imagine.

5. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois

Designated as a part of U.S. Highway 41, you can expect to see some interesting things on this drive. You will get a great view of the Sears Tower, which was once the tallest building in the world. And if you are up for a day at the beach, you are on the right road as there are 26 miles of Lake Michigan beaches along the way.

These are just a few of the highways you can travel, but don’t stop there. Get out there and explore America, and you are sure to find many wonderful things to do and see.
